For the man who is busy, there is a way to minimize the time it takes to get ready in the morning and gain time by creating a working closet that is organized. This is easily done by putting your clothes into your closet in a way that makes everything easier. Once you do that, you will never need to waste time in search of your favorite belt or shirt trying not to be late somewhere.
If you don’t need it, don’t keep it
A huge problem with closets that are too full is that they tend to be full of clothing items that you just don’t need. It might be because you are attached to certain items that you never use anymore or it could be that you are just too lazy to clean the closet out.
To weed out the chaff take every single item out of your closet. Go through the items one at a time. If you haven’t worn something in more than a year, get rid of it. Give it to charity. Most of the time, charities will actually come right to your door to pick up donations too. Repeat this process once each year.
You also need to store seasonal clothing. In the winter, put all of your summer outfits in a suitcase or another closet somewhere. Do the same thing with the winter clothes in the summer.
An affordable storage option is to purchase 30 gallon tote boxes (they are fairly cheap about $10 each and will last forever). I purchased three of these and threw all of my spring and summer clothes into them. I store them in the garage until the weather makes sense to bring them back out. Once winter is over I just throw all my winter clothes into the totes and bring out the spring/summer clothes.
It’s a seasonal cycle that not only saves me plenty of closet space, but also makes it so much easier to organize my outfits.
Also, each time you buy a new clothing item, throw one away or give it to charity. By doing all of these things, your closet will be less full which makes it easier to find what you are looking for quickly.
Like goes with like
If you want to make it really easy to find what you are looking for, hang all of your pants together, then all of your button down shirts, all of your polo shirts, etc. Once you have that done, you will know exactly which part of your closet to look in for that particular item you need.
You can also use a closet organizer and make the smaller accessories more visible by hanging them on the door. Use the floor of your closet too. Doing all of these things will give you the working closet that you need.
